With the choir to a little town called Varallo in the north of Piedmont, at some 1500 ft above sea level. Above the town is a Sanctuary which is devoted to the suffering of Christ. To get there you can either walk or take a cable car. This is the cable car station, which I thought might please the architectural tastes of Squire Ashley of Slawston, amongst others. With regard to the booze and suffering, more later.

What a lovely building. It has a ring of Lewis's in the centre of Leicester, in it's heyday.
Yes indeedy, it also looks like a cross (no pun intended) between one of Holden's Underground stations and the Haddenham water tower. Bet Mussolini approved.
Steep hill, fine building; bloke with hands in pockets. He should watch out. A man could miss his step on an incline like that, especially if he had renounced The Lord and taken to drink. All the art deco in the world would be of no use to a man falling downhill with his hands in his pockets.
After an extended session on B-52s in a sleazy, overpriced bar in some Austrian ski resort I once fell uphill. I had both hands in my Barbour's pockets and couldn't get then out in time to lessen the not inconsiderable impact. My nose was the first thing to meet the ice-covered pavement. When my companions stopped laughing they both remarked that they had never seen so much blood. Had to have the hooter operated on in Innsbruck. Came back to Blighty looking like I'd done a couple of rounds with Joe Calzaghe, whoever he is.
I though it an improvement. Made you look hard!
