A Real Bar

Went to Genoa on Sunday for the football. Arrived late so I managed to get a shot of the bar (where we go prior to each match to get loaded up) empty. All the usual suspects were at the match which had already kicked off. Behind the little counter on the left where all the dead pig is lying in state, sit two old boys with their Berkel machine, hewing away at pork bits for rolls and sarnies. The walls of the bar are lined with bottles of wine, floor to ceiling. Marvellous. Terrible match, Genoa losing 3-1.

This reminds me in an obscure way, obviously, of the Finches Arms in Hambleton, Rutland. In the mid 70s I went in there and the landlord appeared and started to pull my pint with a very bloody hand. 'My dear fellow', I said patronisingly 'Have you hurt yourself?' He replied 'No mate, just killed a pig out the back'. Now that's country life.

Great bar - i'm very pleased to see that you use the 'phone while you're on the bog.

On one of my all too infrequent visits to The Land of Ron we came across a vast scrap yard. But inside, under covers were a series of Berkel bacon slicers. All appeared to be in mint condition, freestanding on shapely pedestals, all glistening with that bright red paint and polished chrome. I still dream about them.

That same Scrapyard owner also had a superb selection of Moto Guzzi bikes and Lambretta scooters, righ back to the first ones that looked funny. Nice spot. Bit late coming to this posting and nearly missed it. Good shot Ron.
